There’s no denying it, light electric vehicles are the wave of the future. In just a few years, sales of light electric vehicles, including electric bikes, electric skateboards, and electric scooters, have all around the world.

This growth has been seen most notably in Europe but the United States is beginning to catch up as well. Might be the hot ticket item for now, but sales of their electric cousin, the electric scooter, are expected to rise! Of course, there are many different types of and a myriad of concerns to consider. As you might imagine, the biggest deciding factor is going to be your own usage. Do you want something that can replace your daily driver for that short commute?

Or are you just looking for a cool gift for your kid for Christmas? Maybe there’s someone close to you that is having trouble with mobility and an electric scooter could give them the freedom they desire. Whatever your needs are, we’ve got the handy guide to help! One of the cardinal differences between e-scooters and their other electric cousins is the range of styles. For instance, when we talk about electric skateboards, the differences are mostly aesthetic as they are all roughly the same style. E-bikes have a little bit more variation in that you can get all the same styles you would in manual bikes, i.e., mountain, cruiser, road, etc.

Chances are, you’ve already decided what style you need but, just in case, we’ll go over the major classes briefly here. One of the biggest choices you have to make will be what type of drive system you’re going to want.

Chains or Belts: Not Just for Pants Chain Gang Out of the two systems, the chain drive tends to be the more reliable of the two. Chains also have a leg up on belts in that they typically last much longer. A chain system most often involves two gears (generally referred to as a pinion and sprocket) and the chain. Occasionally, some scooters will have a direct connection between the driven pinion and the engine.

Most, if not all, chain driven machines will also have a centrifugal clutch. It’s not all good though, chain driven can emit a bit of racket while being ridden. The noise of the chain can be a good thing though because it gives warning to other people that you’re driving an electric scooter and things are about to get serious if they don’t recognize! It’s like a much louder and consistent horn!

So if you’re expecting a pleasantly quiet e-scooter, you might be disappointed with one that is chain driven. Either will be great getting you where you need to be. There are a few differences in performance, though. Primarily, belt driven systems have some issues going off-road or on rocky conditions. So don’t go thinking you’re getting an all-terrain scooter with a belt drive! There’s probably nothing more exciting than deciding whether or not you’re going to be using a chain or belt drive scooter.

That is, of course, when you’re trying to figure out how much power you’re going to need. That will first depend on the battery.

Battery Initially, electric scooters were built with Lead Acid (SLA) batteries (and many still are). This was mainly because Lead Acid batteries were, and remain, economical to build so manufacturers could keep their overhead low and profits high at the expense of the buyer. Some companies are aware that you might not be an everyday e-scooter commuter or perhaps just need a mobility scooter to get around the house. In that case, an SLA battery might for you! But if you’re going to be using your scooter daily, you’re in luck as most contemporary e-scooter manufacturers have switched to Lithium Ion (Li-ion) as research suggests, it’s a much better battery variety. The biggest advantage of the Li-ion battery is that they are one-third the weight of Lead Acid and about one-third the size.

As you might imagine, this allows for a much lighter scooter especially for folding scooters, which are growing in popularity for train and bus commutes, and can be carried with less difficulty. And, in the event that you’re battery runs out (and we hope this never happens) it’ll make the scooter easier to push.

Likewise, a lighter scooter is much easier to control. Most importantly, Li-ion batteries have superior performance as opposed to Lead Acid. If you live in a hilly or steep area, a Li-ion battery will give you a little more juice to get over that hill or accelerate faster through that quiet intersection. Finally, Lithium-ion batteries have an excellent cycle life as opposed to Lead Acid. Lead Acid batteries typically last only up to about 100-200 charge cycles and then their performance starts to deteriorate significantly.

On the other hand, most Lithium-based batteries will provide you with at least 500 charge cycles. In fact, they’ve been known to provide up to 2000 charge cycles! As you might imagine, e-scooters with Lithium batteries will be a little pricier up front. Though, in the long run, it will cost less when you take into consideration maintenance or the cost of a new scooter or battery entirely if your Lead Acid battery runs out! After the type of battery, the second thing to consider in terms of power is going to be the wattage of your electric scooter.

Watt’s Going On? When we talk about the power of your electric scooter, we talk primarily in terms of watts.

Again, this is all going to depend on your intended use. Most electric scooters under 350 watts will be slow to accelerate, have low speed, and will prove to be difficult getting up hills. If you’re going to buy a mobility scooter or something for your kid to ride around on, this wattage will probably be fine.

If you want an e-scooter with the ability to replace your daily driver, or if you’re going to spend a good chunk of time riding up-hill, you’ll want to up that wattage to 650 or even 1000! The amount of watts and the type of battery pack are going to affect your overall speed and range. Most electric scooters with newer Li-ion battery packs commonly have around a 45-minute, or about 10 mile, run time on even ground with no hills and at a moderate speed.

If you do live in a hilly or steep area, expect the scooter, battery, and motor to have to do more work. This will result in a lesser range. It will certainly be important to consider what your commute looks like in terms of mileage and terrain.

If you plot out your ride before you buy your electric scooter, you’ll have a much better idea of what type of scooter you’ll need. Of course, with all that power and drive, you’re going to want to stop some time, so the brakes are going to be one of the most important parts of your electric scooter.

Pump the Brakes Generally, there are two kinds of braking systems to consider when you’re looking to purchase your electric scooter: Front only braking systems and dual, or front and rear, braking systems. Front Brakes The total weight of an (think batteries, motor and everything else) plus their rider, is going to be pretty heavy.

This will require a well-made braking system. Band brakes can lock the wheels instead of slowing them down, which can eventually begin to wear down your tires and cause accidents especially when conditions get slick or icy. Front band brakes are exceptionally dangerous as they have a tendency to lock the front wheel when engaged and have the potential to send the rider flipping over the handlebars, causing unprecedented amounts of damage. Front and Rear Brakes Scooters with both front and rear v-brakes or disk brakes traditionally perform the best in terms of braking. One is the loneliest number and two is always better than one in the braking world.

Electric scooters with a single brake certainly can’t stop as fast as those electric scooters with two brakes. Keep in mind that you don’t always need to engage both breaks. For example, if you’re on a dirt trail or some of those wet and sandy beach sides, then you should primarily use the rear brakes so you don’t lock up the front wheel and risk flipping over the handlebars or turning over your scooter. But if you’re riding on even, dry pavement, you should feel free to engage both the front and rear brakes together.

There’s a lot to take into consideration before making any purchase and your electric scooter is no different.
