At first, he worries that the plane will sink again. What if he gets stuck?

But, he reasons, 'he had been hammering and climbing on it and it hadn't gone back down. It seemed pretty solid.' ' Brian sinks into the plane and feels around for the pack with his feet. He finds it and then grabs the bag and begins to swim to the surface. That's when he sees the pilot's body. The mosquitoes attacking, he trudges back to his shelter, dragging the pack with him, and collapses into sleep. Even though he is exhausted, he is pleased, 'He had done it.' Fortunately, he shoots himself back up to the surface, but he is still pretty worked up.

The peace of the evening allows him to catch his breath and calm down. He heads back to the shore, exhausted.
